Waterproofness of first copy of branded watches

Water Resistant: Spatwaterdicht

30 meters/3 ATM/3 BAR: Resistant to a small amount of (splash) water such as when washing hands.

50 meters / 5 ATM / 5 BAR: Suitable for showering.

100 meters / 10 ATM / 10 BAR: Suitable for swimming and snorkeling.

200 meters / 20 ATM (plus) / 20 BAR: Suitable for diving.

1000 meters / 100 ATM / 100 BAR: Suitable for deep sea diving.

IP67 / IP68: The water-resistance of electronic equipment such as smartwatches and wearables.

The definition of waterproofing

Water-resistance is indicated by the terms Bar (air pressure), ATM (atmosphere), or meter. When it is indicated to what extent a watch is waterproof, this is often indicated in meters. The higher the number of meters, the 'deeper' the watch is waterproof. But don't take the number of meters literally! It indicates how many meters of pressure - comparable to the pressure of standing water with no movement - the watch can withstand. A watch with a water resistance of 50 meters is therefore not suitable for swimming (but it can be showered with).

A watch that states that it is waterproof, without any depth or pressure indicated, is only splashproof. Should the watch become completely wet, it should be dried again as soon as possible and taken to a watchmaker for inspection.

Special features of waterproof (diving) watches

In general, waterproof watches use a pressure bottom with a rubber 'O' ring to make the back of the watch waterproof. To withstand greater (water) pressure, the bottom is screwed into the box. To go even further, crowns and any snaps are provided with a rubber ring and screw thread and must be tightened to the case after use (screwed crown). Watches suitable for deep-sea diving generally have a helium (vent) valve.

Dive watches are often equipped with a rotating bezel, on which the remaining dive time can be read. This ring can only be turned anti-clockwise to prevent - if the bezel is accidentally rotated - the dive time is unsafe to increase.

The strap of a diving watch is usually made of rubber, plastic, or stainless steel. The closure can be fitted with a sliding system so that the watch can also be worn over the diving suit.

Maintenance

Since water resistance is stated in units of pressure that the watch can withstand, temperature differences must also be taken into account. Because different materials, such as the glass and metal cabinet, expand differently, cabinet parts can deform, resulting in loss of the sealing effect of the gaskets. This can cause leakage. This is especially true if a watch on the beach has warmed up in the hot sun and then suddenly cools down in the much colder seawater. B ij watches with 3, 5, and 10 bar, water resistance is, therefore, caution should be exercised.

Also, be careful with hot water. Hot water from a tap, bath or sauna can - again due to pressure differences - deform the cabinet parts, causing loss of the sealing effect of the gaskets. This can damage the timepiece.

It is important to rinse your waterproof watch (from 5 bar / atm) with clean fresh water after every visit to the beach. Salt water and sand can corrode the metal and cause the ring (bezel) to jam.

Have your waterproof watch tested for water resistance every time it has been opened (for example, after changing the battery).

If, despite all precautions, you think moisture has entered your watch, you can test it by placing an ice cube on the glass for a few minutes. If the glass fogs up on the inside, the timepiece contains moisture. Always take a watch with moisture damage immediately to a watchmaker.

Waterproofing of smartwatches and activity trackers (wearables)

Electronic equipment such as smartwatches and activity trackers have their own water resistance standard called International Protection Rating (IP Code). Read here our article on IP codes for more information.
